Universidade de Lisboa. José Miguel Pereira is full Professor of Forest Engineering at the Department of Natural Resources, Environment and Territory of the University of Lisbon since 2006. He got MSc in Landscape Planning (1986) and PhD in Renewable Natural Resources Studies (1989), both at the University of Arizona - Tucson. He was visiting scientist at the same university in 1992, and in the Joint Research Center of the European Commission's Research in Ispra, Italy, in 1996. Between 2001 and 2004, he was the principal investigator on Tropical Research Institute in Lisbon. He conducts the research in the areas of remote sensing burned areas and pyrogeography, both local and global levels. It has focused his work in the tropical regions, especially in the African savannas and northern Australia.
